Gas Turbine

20% co-firing test of ammonia with city gas has been successfully tested using IHI's commercial scale IM270 2MW gas turbine

Coal Fired Boiler

20% co-firing test of ammonia with pulverized coal has been successfully tested using a 10MW test furnace.

NOx emmissions can be controlled at the same level as 100% coal firing

Carbon Capture

IHI is a pioneer in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies for coal-fired power stations and has been developing the IHI oxyfuel technology since 1989. The culmination of 20 years of research and development, field studies and demonstration projects, the Callide Oxyfuel Project was established in 2008. With a target of demonstrating how we can adapt our existing coal-fired power stations to produce low-emission electricity, oxyfuel for CCS technology was developed and implemented at CS Energy’s existing Callide A Power Station in Queensland, Australia.

This was the first demonstration in the world of such technology and was undertaken as a Joint Venture (JV) between the Australian and Japanese governments, CS Energy and a number of partners. As a key element to the CCS demonstration, IHI adopted their oxyfuel boiler technology to the existing Callide a unit.

IHI Corporation, which is the parent company of IEA, undertook the design, manufacture and delivery to the site of equipment to modify the existing boiler for oxyfuel combustion. During the construction and commissioning phases, specialist technical advisors from IHI Tokyo were at the site to ensure the work was undertaken as designed. IEA was also involved in this project for the boiler plant reconfiguration and managed some of the onshore portion of the works on behalf of IHI. As at August 2013 the demonstration plant has been commissioned and is being evaluated with a view to developing the process for large commercial plant in the future.
